      Frustrations build over Myanmar

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed disappointment Monday that Myanmar's military leadership has ignored UN efforts to foster democracy. There is also some continuing consternation over post-cyclone aid, which has benefited only a small proportion of those in need, even as the UN seeks to double the amount of aid donated so far. The New York Times (10/21) , AlertNet.org/Reuters (10/21)

You have to say that the traditional relationship that Bolivia had with the United States...has come to an end.

Bolivia minister of the presidency Juan Ramón Quintana. Read the full story.

UN Dispatch: Staff of UN aid agencies and NGOs have come under increasing deliberate attack in Somalia and Afghanistan in recent months, as well as in other countries and regions plagued by conflict, such as the Darfur region of western Sudan. In a report released earlier this month on staff security, Mr. Ban called for collective responsibility and closer collaboration between the UN and its Member States to better protect UN staff and other humanitarian workers.

      • UN uncovers $20 million in corrupt contracts in latest case
An internal UN investigation has interrupted a $20 million corruption scheme that involves air charter services from Congo, office supplies from Kenya, consulting jobs from Greece, and payroll services from New York. The five international cases are the latest in the three-year investigation into a fraud epidemic that has uncovered $630 million in compromised contracts. The Washington Post (10/21)
      Development Health and Poverty
      • Food and financial crises take a toll on MDG progress
African Union Commission Chairman Jean Ping said many African nations will not meet their UN Millennium Development Goals due to high food and gas prices. Though gas prices have declined recently, soaring food prices -- which have pushed some 100 million people into poverty -- stand to remain high. The MDGs also include targets for reducing disease, combating child mortality, and addressing other chronic problems. AlertNet.org/Reuters (10/21)

Amnesty International reports that hundreds of prisoners on death row in Nigeria were sentenced based on evidence that was extracted through torture. Nearly 80% of inmates report being beaten, threatened, or tortured during their detentions. BBC (10/21)

      • Political squabbling breeds cynicism in Ukraine
In a move that has signaled the fragile state of the government propelled to power by the so-called Orange Revolution, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has again called for parliamentary elections, a move opposed by Prime Minister Julia Tymoshenko, his fierce rival. Tymoshenko has suggested that the International Monetary Fund predicate an aid package of some $14 billion for the beleaguered state on Yushchenko's canceling the election. As financial crisis in Ukraine deepens and relations with Russia grow chillier, cynicism is setting in among both Ukraine MPs and voters. The Independent (London) (10/21)
      • Pakistan in talks with IMF for multi-billion support package
Hoping to avoid a fiscal crisis stemming from the global financial crisis, Pakistan is in talks with the International Monetary Fund about receiving a $10 billion to $15 billion support package to stabilize its economy. The IMF estimates Pakistan's fiscal shortfall at $3 billion to $4 billion annually. The scale of the support package represents international fears about the prospect of collapse in Pakistan, a nuclear nation where terrorists and extremists are active. Financial Times (10/20)
      • Egypt authors Fatah-Hamas unity government draft plan
Talks in Egypt with 13 different Palestinian organizations led to Egypt's draft plan for peace that calls for the formation of a unity government, combining elements of Fatah and Hamas. Fatah has said that any new government resolution must adhere to previous agreements struck with Israel, a condition that Hamas rejects. BBC (10/21)
      • Right-wing Indian politician arrested for instigating violence
Indian police arrested Raj Thackeray, the leader of the right-wing Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party, after he incited followers to attack north Indian migrants hoping to attend a job recruitment program. The right-wing party is violently opposed to the presence of Indian immigrants in the western state of Maharashtra, where they are blamed for taking jobs and undermining wages. Financial Times (10/21)

The Buy: Aveda's Vintage Clove Shampoo

It's a back-to-basics moment as the economy sputters and the cold weather closes in. In times like these, there's nothing like an old friend to soothe the soul, and Aveda has bounded to the rescue with a relaunch of their very first product from 30 years ago.

Aveda's iconic clove shampoo for brunettes is back in a limited-edition, signature bottle that evokes the 1970's days of yore. It's all package with recycled and recyclable ingredients of course.

The certified organic clove promises to highlight lighter tones, certified organic coffee will enhance brown shades. Then there are the heady scents of lemon, ylang ylang, black pepper and other flower and plant essences. A trip back to 1978 never smelled so sweet.

Archbishop Charles Chaput to Douglas Kmiec: Saying Obama Pro-Life is Wrong
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a weekend interview, Alaska governor and John McCain running mate Sarah Palin again highlighted Barack Obama's abortion views. Palin accused Obama of trying to "pretty up" his record during the presidential debate last week even though he supports unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy. Palin made the comments in an interview with CBN News senior correspondent David Brody. "I think the most troubling issue that I know of that Barack Obama is completely the other side of John McCain and that I am on is, is the abortion issue because his abortion stance is so extreme," Palin said. "It's so, so far left that it's way out of the mainstream. I think he's in some sense succeeded in trying to package up, and pretty-up some of his policies to make them look mainstream even on abortion." Palin says she hopes more is done to educate voters between now and the November 4 election to show them how out of step Obama's abortion views are with most Americans. "American voters have got to realize his opposition to parental consent, his opposition to a ban on partial birth abortion and most troubling his opposition to the child born alive act," she said. George Soros Funds Catholic Groups Making Obama Seem Pro-Life on Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A Catholic pro-life group says new information adds to the criticism a couple of Catholics organizations have already received for trying to make Barack Obama seem pro-life on abortion. Leading abortion activist and billionaire George Soros is behind the groups. Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and Catholics United have been working overtime to mask Obama's pro-abortion views. The groups have called him pro-life even though he supports unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason. In comments sent to LifeNews.com today, Catholic League president Bill Donohue exposes the nexus between George Soros and two left-wing Catholic groups. In 2006, Soros’ Open Society Institute gave Catholics in Alliance $100,000 (double the amount he gave in 2005), Donohue indicates. In the same year, Catholics in Alliance listed Catholics United on its 990 as an organization with which it has a formal relationship. Donohue says John Podesta, who runs the Soros-funded organization, Center for American Progress, admits that he works closely with Catholics in Alliance and Catholics United. “Why would any Catholic organization take money from a man like George Soros? Because legitimate sources of revenue aren't available?" Full story at LifeNews.com

GOP Sends Mailer to North Carolina Voters on Obama's Votes on Abortion Bill
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The national Republican Party has sent a mailer to thousands of voters in North Carolina targeting Barack Obama's pro-abortion views. The mailer highlights his votes against bills in the Illinois legislature that would have required medical care for newborns who survive failed abortions. While Congress almost unanimously approved a similar bill, with John McCain supporting it, Obama voted against the measure on four occasions. "When it comes to the right to life, Barack Obama doesn't share our values," the headline of the piece reads. "Barack Obama, not who you think he is." The piece references Chicago-area nurse Jill Stanek, who blew the whistle on one hospital leaving babies to die in a soiled utility room when they survived botched abortions. Noting Obama's vote against the bill to provide care in his own committee, the GOP mailer cites the disparity between Obama and abortion advocates in Congress who approved the similar bill. "That's right, even abortion rights advocates like John Kerry and Hillary Clinton voted for the Born Alive Infants Protection Act that Barack Obama opposed," the mailer says. Hundreds of Thousands of Pro-Life Students to Silently Protest Abortion Tuesday
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- As many as 200,000 pro-life students at 4,000 schools in 22 countries plan to take part in the fifth annual Pro-life Day of Silent Solidarity on Tuesday. Sponsored by the pro-life group Stand True, the event has awakened the consciences of millions of teenagers and college students to the reality of abortion. Bryan Kemper, president of the group, tells LifeNews.com that students in the U.S. and other nations will hear a clear pro-life message even though thousands of pro-life students will take a vow of silence to speak up for unborn children. The students will wear red tape over their mouths or red armbands to show their support for protecting women and children from abortion. "The students are speaking loud and clear, they want an end to legalized child killing," he said. "We are getting thousands of e-mails, comments and Internet messages from students thanking us for giving them a peaceful way to stand up and be counted." "Thousands of American babies are permanently silenced every day by the violent act of abortion," Kemper says. "This day is in honor of those children, and we will stay silent as an act of solidarity with these innocent victims." Full story at LifeNews.com

California Police Officer Says Parental Notification Law on Abortion Helps Teens
Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- A California police officer, who is a veteran of investigating sexual abuse cases, says the parental notification measure California voters will consider next month is sorely needed. California is one of a handful of states that don't let parents know of their daughter's potential abortion. The case involved a San Bernardino County couple who didn't find out until four years later that their 12-year-old daughter had been a victim of sexual abuse and that the assailant forced her to have an abortion to cover up his crime. The couple reported the attack to police and, without their involvement, the abuser never would have been held accountable. Sgt. Tom Yarrington, the police officer who investigated the case, says if California had a law requiring abortion providers to inform families when underage girls seek their services, the girl in this case would have been spared further abuse. "The biggest difference is that the abuse would have ceased immediately," Yarrington said. "Second of all, she would have been receiving counseling immediately, which is going to help her through the healing process and allow her to move on with her life." Full story at LifeNews.com

NARAL, Abortion Advocates Endorse Washington Assisted Suicide Initiative
      Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) --
Leading pro-abortion groups in Washington have taken the somewhat unusual of step of endorsing a ballot measure that would make the state the second to legalize assisted suicide. A leading pro-life advocate says he's not surprised the pro-abortion movement has linked up with euthanasia advocates. Calling it an "important" vote to "promote progress in Washington" Planned Parenthood of Washington emailed its supporters a copy of a voting guide it compiled along with other liberal groups in the state. The names of the groups endorsing a specific candidate or ballot issue are listed, and NARAL is indicated as endorsing the assisted suicide measure. Dan Kennedy, the head of Human Life of Washington, told LifeNews.com Monday that he's not surprised abortion advocates are endorsing assisted suicide. That puts them as thinking both babies and elderly or disabled people are problems.
"It's no surprise that the abortion lobby endorses imposing death on the defenseless," he said. "As the purveyors of the culture of death, their brutal and predatory view of the vulnerable knows no bounds. They make a mockery of compassion by substituting killing for caring." South Dakota Pro-Life Group Files Lawsuit Over Misleading Abortion Ban Ads
      Sioux Falls, SD (LifeNews.com) --
A South Dakota pro-life group that is spearheading the efforts to get voters to approve a ban on almost all abortions has filed a lawsuit against abortion advocates who it says are misleading voters. Vote Yes for Life says the lead pro-abortion group against the ban is airing false advertisements against it. The VoteYesForLife.com campaign is holding a press conference today to announce the lawsuit and explain why the ads are false.
The group tells LifeNews.com that the ads allegedly make "patently false claims" about Measure 11, the ban on all abortions except those to save the mother's life or in cases of rape or incest. Vote Yes for Life says the pro-abortion ads falsely claim that, if Measure 11 passes, government will be involved in deciding if a woman could have an abortion when faced with medical conditions that present a risk to her health. Nothing could be further from the truth, the group contends. Full story at LifeNews.com

Santa Clara School of Law Condemned for Rewarding Pro-Abortion Politician
      Santa Clara, CA (LifeNews.com) --
A Catholic law school in California is drawing condemnation from pro-life advocates for a decision to bestow an award on a pro-abortion politician. At a celebration tomorrow evening, Santa Clara School of Law will give pro-abortion former congressman and White House chief of staff Leon Panetta a top award. The school will give Panetta the Justice and Human Rights Award at its fifth annual “Diversity Gala" despite Panetta's consistent advocacy of abortion in the nation's capital.
Panetta’s terms as a congressman were highlighted by his strongly pro-abortion voting record and he co-sponsored the so-called Freedom of Choice Act in 1990 -- that Barack Obama supports and that would overturn every law limiting or reducing abortion nationwide. ACTION: Contact Santa Clara Law School with your objections about the Panetta award. Contact the school at 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, California 95053, call (408) 554-4767, fax (408) 554-5095, or email lawadmissions@scu.edu. Full story at LifeNews.com

New Jersey Quality Inn, Clarion Hotels Give Women Discounts for Abortions
Cherry Hill, NJ(LifeNews.com) -- Women heading to New Jersey for abortions are getting discounts at two brand name hotels and pro-life advocates are working to expose the practice. An abortion business in Cherry Hill that does abortions up to six months into pregnancy worked out the discounts with two local hotels. New Jersey Right to Life indicates that participants in the local 40 Days for Life prayer campaign have learned that the Cherry Hill Women's Center made the arrangements. The Clarion Hotel in Cherry Hill offers a reduced rate of $59 for a room originally priced at $109 to women staying there from out of town to get an abortion. Women need only show a receipt from the abortion business saying an overnight stay is necessary. In addition, the Quality Inn in Maple Shade offers a discounted rate of $74.95 for a room originally priced at $99.99 and a free breakfast of eggs and pancakes for women who present a stamped pamphlet from the abortion center. ACTION: Send your complaints to the following: a) Clarion Hotel, Route 70 & I-295, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034, (856) 428-2300, fax (856) 354-7662, or contact via web site; b) Quality Inn Maple Shade, 531 Route 38 West, Maple Shade, NJ 08052, (856) 235-6400, fax (856) 727-1027. Abortion Boat Gives Another Woman Dangerous Drug, Leaving Spain Tonight
Valencia, Spain (LifeNews.com) -- The abortion boat operated by the Dutch-based pro-abortion group Women on Waves has taken another woman from Spain into international water to give her the dangerous abortion drug RU 486. Also know as mifepristone, the drug has killed more than a dozen women worldwide and injured thousands. "This morning when the crew was preparing to leave for a short sailing trip, a woman with an unwanted pregnancy who has spent the night in Valencia, sought help," the group told LifeNews.com in an email statement. 'The captain decided to sail to international waters so that the medical staff could provide her with the abortion pill," the group added. When in international waters, the vessel operates under the local law of its flag, in this case the Netherlands, and law there allows women to obtain the dangerous abortion pill without preconditions. New Ecuador Constitution Sells Out Its Pro-Life Abortion Laws With One Word
      by Carlos Polo
The second chapter of article 417 of the recently approved Constitution of Ecuador reads: "The international treaties ratified by Ecuador will be subject to the established tenets of the Constitution. In the case of treaties and other international human rights instruments, these principles will be understood to be pro-human, non-restricting of rights, of direct applicability and of open clause in the Constitution." Notice how "international treaties" and "international human rights instruments" are now considered equivalent, when in reality, the difference is enormous. This change, which would go unnoticed by all but the most perceptive citizen, essentially allows for Ecuadorian laws to be generated by people other than Ecuadorians. In this way, the sovereignty of Ecuador has been sold abroad by its own constitution. Full story at LifeNews.com

        Mobile broadband hits the air
        By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY
Baltimore recently became the first city in the USA to go live with WiMax. Short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, WiMax is a fourth-generation (4G) wireless technology that can turn whole cities into one big hot spot. Sprint has an even grander vision: It wants to turn the entire USA into a mobile surfing zone. Read more

Campaign of rape threatens women and girls in Congo

Renewed fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in yet another wave of vicious gang rapes against women and girls, many of whom had already been violated during previous periods of violence. The DRC's violence against women situation is commonly acknowledged to be the most severe in the world, with mass rape being used as a weapon by varied combatants to strike terror into local populations. The Globe and Mail (Toronto) (10/17)

We have a weak administration in a dysfunctional situation and they think [rape is] a women's problem; they have other priorities."

Vénantie Bisimua, founder of the Network of Women for the Defense of Rights and Peace in eastern Congo. Read the full story.

UN Dispatch: Ending the impunity for rapists in eastern Congo is one of the most important prerequisites to achieving peace in the wartorn region, and the UN has been on the front lines, helping victims come forward and building the judicial structure necessary to end this scourge.

        • UN says development should focus on water aid first
A study by the UN found that aid and development should focus first on improving access to water, water quality, and sanitation, before focusing on such second-order necessities as education and health care. The study finds that providing safe and sanitized water, plumbing and toilets is the number-one way to combat poverty. Financial Times (10/20)

        • Report: China battles afflictions of the affluent
As China's economic rise translate into lifestyle changes for its citizens, diseases associated with wealthier lifestyles are increasingly becoming a problem for the country, according to a report published in the British medical journal, The Lancet. Increased consumption of rich foods, tobacco use and more hours in front of the television are some of the behaviors linked to new ailments among Chinese citizens, the report says. Newsweek (10/19)
        • Aid worker murdered in Kabul
A South African aid worker was killed in Kabul Monday when Taliban gunmen attacked her on the way to work. The Taliban has increased its campaign against aid workers this year in an apparent bid to undermine government claims that security in Afghanistan is improving. Tropical cyclones may be some help in staving off global warming as accompanying rains and floods wash away vegetation and soil containing greenhouse gases and transferring them to long-term deposits in the oceans, according to a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience. • Oil-wealthy Venezuela feels ripple effects of financial crisis
Although Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has publicly celebrated the economic woes of the U.S., Venezuela's economy is in fact deeply connected to that of the U.S. and it stands to decline with falling oil prices. Venezuelan oil accounts for 10% of all U.S. oil imports; furthermore, U.S. refineries are uniquely qualified to process Venezuelan crude. Chavez, who spent lavishly at home and abroad when oil prices reached a peak of $145 per gallon, needs oil prices to hover above $95 per gallon in order to balance Venezuela's budget. • China increases restrictions on Muslim worship
Chinese authorities are expanding restrictions on the practice of the Islamic faith in northwest China. Sermon lengths and prayers outside mosques are among the practices Chinese authorities are seizing control over. Students and government workers who practice Islam are compelled to eat during Ramadan, and the government is preventing Muslims from making the pilgrimage to Mecca, except under the watchful eye of government-run tours. The New York Times (10/19)
        • China formalizes land-use reform
After leaving the issue to question following a recent conference on the matter, China announced that it would follow through on a proposed reform to grant farmers the power to lease or transfer land-use rights. Coming on the 30th anniversary of initial land reforms enacted by Deng Xiaoping, the latest land reforms are considered a major economic breakthrough. The New York Times (10/19)

        • Russian war game reveals military as unfit
A nationwide war game in Russia designed to practice against a NATO or U.S.-led invasion, an exercise in which Russia boasted a new record set for distance traveled by an intercontinental ballistic missile, showed the degree to which Russian military effectiveness has declined. U.S. military commanders said that years of neglect and budget cuts during Boris Yeltsin's administration has led to a military that is not sufficient to meet Russia's interests. The New York Times (10/20)
        • MDC sits out arbitration meeting after Zimbabwe denies Tsvangirai passport
Zimbabwe's MDC opposition party is sitting out a meeting of the Southern Africa Development Community hosted in Swaziland to deal with the power-sharing stalemate in Zimbabwe after security officials there refused to issue MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai a passport. MDC representatives called the move a symptom of Zanu-PF leader and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's reluctance to share power with Tsvangirai, the duly elected prime minister of the nation. BBC (10/20)
        • Economic woes tangle Pakistan, China relationship
Pakistan's failure to convince China to commit cash to ensure Pakistan can meet its current account payments and bolster its economy has left President Asif Ali Zardari facing the increasingly likely prospect of needing to approach the unpopular International Monetary Fund for help. The New York Times (10/19)
        • Political and social crisis on display in Thailand
A brewing conflict between authority figures in Thailand came to a head when the nation's army chief told the prime minister to step down on national television, and the prime minister said no. The general has said that he does not favor a coup, as it seems no more likely than other options -- such as the prime minister's resignation or new elections -- to resolve domestic unrest without violence.
