Obama Asked to Apologize For Calling Pro-Life Group Liars on His Abortion Vote
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pro-life organization has released a new web ad asking Barack Obama to apologize for saying it lied about his abortion votes. Obama accused National Right to Life of lying when it released documents verifying he voted against medical care for newborns who survive abortions. The dustup surrounds the votes Obama cast against bills in the Illinois legislature to make sure infants aren't left to die after they survive a failed abortion. Obama voted against the bills, he says, because they would have violated Roe v. Wade, yet documents the National Right to Life Committee released weeks ago showed Obama opposed the measure even after supporting a successful amendment to limit its effect on Roe. Those documents were supported by FactCheck, a nonpartisan research group at the University of Pennsylvania, yet Obama still hasn't apologized for calling NRLC officials liars. The pro-life group told LifeNews.com on Friday that it has released a new Internet ad asking him to do so. "Will Obama now apologize for calling us liars when we were the ones telling the truth?" Planned Parenthood Email Using Sarah Palin's Name Brings Money for Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A Planned Parenthood spokesman has admitted that an email using Sarah Palin's name to generate anger within the pro-abortion movement and donations for the abortion business is paying dividends. While Planned Parenthood may not have started the email blitz, it is raking in the dough from it. During the last two weeks, abortion advocates have been circulating an email across the Internet that encourages pro-abortion voters to make a donation to Planned Parenthood in the name of Sarah Palin. The email suggests donating to the abortion business and sending an acknowledgement to Palin at the John McCain campaign headquarters saying the donation was made on her behalf. The email is the latest attack on the Alaska governor over her pro-life views from backers of the campaign of abortion proponent Barack Obama. Planned Parenthood spokesman Tait Sye told the ANI news service the email is bringing in big bucks for the pro-abortion group, which has endorsed Obama. "We have seen an increase in donations," Skye admitted. "People are responding to how out-of-touch McCain and Palin are on women's health and they wanted to do something about it." Sye said Planned Parenthood, which does 25 percent of the 1.25 million abortions done annually in the United States, is still tallying the donation totals and will release a figure next week. Pro-Life Pastor Ready to Challenge IRS on Endorsements by Backing McCain
Warroad, MN (LifeNews.com) -- With the urging of a pro-life law firm wanting to topple the regulations, a pro-life pastor in Minnesota appears ready to make a presidential endorsement from the pulpit in an effort to challenge IRS regulations prohibiting that. The Alliance Defense Fund, a pro-life law firm, is recruiting several dozen pastors in the effort. The law firm hopes to have the endorsement occur this Sunday despite a federal ban on political endorsements by tax-exempt houses of worship. Rev. Gus Booth, pastor of Warroad Community Church, says he plans to be one of the pastors involved in the effort and he indicated he's already getting calls from interested media. Booth already made news for himself earlier this year when he spoke out against both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, saying their pro-abortion views run contrary with the Biblical teachings of a respect for human life. Booth plans to endorse McCain, who is says is pro-life on abortion. The effort is intended to elicit an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service that ADF would then challenge in federal court, with the ultimate goal of persuading the Supreme Court to overthrow the 54-year-old ban called the Johnson Amendment that restricts tax-exempt non-profits, such as churches, from engaging in political campaigns. Ethical Embryonic Stem Cell Research Alternative Crosses Another Hurdle
Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- An alternative to embryonic stem cell research that pro-life advocates have hailed as ethical has passed another hurdle in its effectiveness. Scientists first created iPS cells less than a year ago and they excited pro-life groups because the direct reprogramming process to create them doesn't destroy human life. Scientists at Harvard University have helped iPSCs (induced pluripotent stem cells) overcome one of the big hurdles for embryonic stem cell research by turning the adult stem cells into an embryonic-like state without forming tumors. The tumors are one of the efficacy problems, along with immune system rejection issues, that plague embryonic stem cells and prevent them from being as effective as adult stem cells. With the iPSCs, the first ones created were made by putting four genes into the DNA of adult cells using retroviruses, which can cause cancer in animals. The scientists used a different type of virus, known as an adenovirus, which does not integrate its genes into a cell's DNA and therefore is believed to be harmless, to ferry the same four transformative genes into the DNA of mouse skin and liver cells. Wesley J. Smith, a leading bioethicist and attorney, says "IPSCs were first created in humans only about 10 1/2 months ago, yet hurdles to their full use in regenerative medicine fall at a rate not seen with embryonic stem cell research, or, for sure, therapeutic cloning." YouTube Pulls Video of Eduardo Verástegui Denouncing Obama on Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- No sooner had the video gone up of popular Hispanic actor Eduardo Verástegui denouncing presidential candidate Barack Obama on abortion than YouTube officials took it down. The video sharing site removed the full version of the video, which showed graphic images of abortions. It did, however, leave an edited version in place that contains the Bella actor urging Latinos to vote against Obama without the footage of babies who have died from abortions. The Verástegui video has already caught fire across the Internet with more than 8,000 people viewing it in only two days. It features the former Mexican pop singer and telenovella actor telling Hispanic Americans that Obama is pro-abortion and wants to pay for abortions with their tax money. In the new video, conducted in Spanish, Verástegui, says Obama is out of step with the overwhelming majority of Hispanics who are pro-life. We need to put an end to abortion and political candidates play a very important role in this matter, he says. Full story at LifeNews.com
Catholic Hospital Group Says Abortion Pressures Means HHS Rule Needed
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- On the last day for public comments about the proposed rule to enforce the laws protecting medical staff and centers from doing abortions, a Catholic hospital network says it's needed. The Alliance of Catholic Health Care says it has enough evidence of doctors and medical centers facing pressure to do abortions. Citing the need to be free from religious discrimination for the conscience protections it offers, the Alliance called on the Health and Human Services Department to finalize the proposal that has been in the news the last few weeks. "Our members provide health care services in accordance with the religious and moral tenets of the Catholic faith," said William J. Cox, president and CEO of the Alliance. "Central to these beliefs is a firm commitment to the dignity of the human person from conception to natural death and a deep concern for the health care needs of the poor and for those in spiritual need." Congressional Resolution Criticizes UN for Pressuring Ireland to OK Abortions
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A pro-life congressman has introduced a resolution asking Congress to condemn two United Nations committees for trying to pressure other Ireland into legalizing abortions. Rep. Thad McCotter, a Michigan Republican, is behind the resolution to rebuke the UN for coercing the Irish people. McCotter introduced the resolution along with Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida and Chris Smith of New Jersey. The three lawmakers "condemn the efforts of the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations and the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to pressure and coerce the democratically elected government of the Republic of Ireland to reduce or eliminate its constitutionally established abortion restrictions." It complains that members of Human Rights Committee and the CEDAW operate without any formal oversight and are entirely unaccountable to the United Nations and its member states. It also accuses the members of the committees of trying to change the meaning of and text of the CEDAW treaty to make it appear to support abortion and require its legalization. Citing five occasions on which the UN pressured Ireland to legalize abortions, the resolution also says the UN has pressured dozens of other nations as well. Full story at LifeNews.com
Duty to Die: Why British Govt Advisor Wrong on Killing People With Dementia
by Ken Conner
A waste. A burden. That is how influential medical ethics expert Baroness Warnock views people suffering from dementia. Lady Warnock, a prominent adviser to the British government, told the Church of Scotland's Life and Work magazine that people suffering from dementia should be allowed to kill themselves rather than continue to burden their families and Britain's National Health Service. Sadly, Warnock's comments are all too consistent with our modern utilitarian view of life. Lady Warnock argues that people suffering from dementia are "wasting" their families' lives and the nation's resources. She believes that merely having dementia makes one's life not worth living. She maintains that people should be allowed to give advance notice to a third party that they wish to be killed when they reach a set point of mental deterioration. And she wants to expand this "advance directive" to include just about any situation where a person believes their life is no longer worth living. Her ultimate goal is to license people to "put others down." "Put them down"like a sick dog. At least she's frank. Full story at LifeNews.com
Supreme Court Asked to Decide Whether Abortion Kills Human Being
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Supreme Court on Monday will decide whether or not it will hold a hearing on an appeal in a case involving an abortion practitioner who misled a woman. Abortion practitioner Sheldon Turkish told potential abortion patient Rose Acuna that her unborn baby was "nothing but some blood."
The case is heralded by some pro-life attorneys as the first chance for the Supreme Court in 35 years to decide whether abortions kills a human being. After the New Jersey Supreme Court said in November that it won't reconsider the decision it handed down in September against Acuna, her attorney filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. The case involves a 1996 abortion and Acuna says Turkish misled her but the New Jersey court ruled Turkish didn't have to tell Acuna that the abortion would kill her baby. A kidney disorder made Acuna's pregnancy difficult and Turkish advised her to have an abortion. She was about six to seven weeks pregnant at the time of the abortion. According to the lawsuit, Acuna asked if "the baby was already there" and Turkish replied that it's "nothing but some blood." Full story at LifeNews.com
California Parental Notification on Abortion Measure Gets Boost in Second Poll
Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The second poll in as many days shows a plurality of California voters support Proposition 4, a ballot measure that would allow parents to know when their minor daughters are considering an abortion. The measure draws the support of 49 percent of California residents thanks in part to Latino voters. A new Field Poll of 830 likely voters finds the measure leading 49-41 percent with another 10 percent of voters undecided. Among Hispanic voters, who now account for 17 percent of all voters in the state, support for the parental notification measure jumps to 62-31 percent. That could help push the poll over the top after it lost twice in 2005 and 2006. "Latino voters are more supportive of the measure than in the past elections," Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll, said about the new survey. "The timing of the vote also helps, since Latinos make up a larger proportion of the voters in a presidential election." DiCamillo also noted that many of the undecided voters opposed the notification measure after last-minute ad campaigns by abortion advocates and that they are expected to do the same thing this time around. The Field Poll also showed that Republicans favor the measure by a 69 percent margin while 50 percent of Democrats are opposed to it. While 80 percent of conservatives back the measure, 66 percent of liberals oppose it. Full story at LifeNews.com
Australia Judge in Brisbane Criticized for Allowing Abortion on 12-Year-Old Girl
Brisbane, Australia (LifeNews.com) -- A judge in Australia is coming under heavy criticism for allowing a 12-year-old girl to have an abortion. Queensland Supreme Court Justice Margaret Wilson has ordered that doctors in the Australian state be allowed to give the young girl the dangerous abortion drug mifepristone (RU 486). The decision came in a closed-door hearing last week and the court heard how the girl in question is 18 weeks pregnant. The girl sought the abortion at a public hospital and apparently has the support of her parents. State government attorneys brought the case before the judge on behalf of the physicians and said the court had to approve the abortion because of the girl's young age. According to local media, the girl in question is mentally disabled and the court was told that she may not have a full understanding and appreciation of the situation. Although the girl was an obvious victim of sexual abuse, Judge Wilson granted the abortion request and said taking the baby's life was in the girl's best interest. Full story at LifeNews.com
