Obama and Biden Have Clear Pro-Abortion Litmus Test for Supreme Court
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The issue of judicial picks is important for the pro-life community because the next set of Supreme Court judges will likely determine whether America has another 35 years of 50 million abortions. Yet, the issue hasn't received near the national attention it normally does in a presidential election year. Mario Diaz, the policy director for legal issues for the pro-life group Concerned Women for America, says he is surprised a comment Biden made during the vice-presidential debate hasn't received more attention. Asked to name a policy issue on which he changed his mind, Biden said he determined five years into his Senate tenure that he should start evaluating the ideology of judicial appointments. Diaz says Obama shares the pro-abortion litmus test Biden has and pointed to a recent email the Obama campaign sent a member of his group. “While I have no litmus test for judges, my bottom line is confidence that a judicial nominee will respect the constitutionally protected rights of all Americans and resist the temptation to substitute personal ideology for legal reasoning," the campaign said for the candidate. "I believe, however, that a judicial nominee with a history of undermining settled law like Roe v. Wade deserves greater scrutiny," the email continued. "Nominees to the federal bench who are out-of-step with mainstream America should not be confirmed. That is why in the past I have opposed the nominations of Supreme Court Justices Roberts and Alito." Diaz say Obama's campaign denies he has a litmus test and then puts forward a pro-abortion mandate for judicial picks. Full story at LifeNews.com

John McCain Can Still Win Electoral College, Needs 9 Battleground States
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The downturn in the economy has given Barack Obama a lead over John McCain nationwide and in virtually all of the battleground states. In the latest LifeNews.com electoral college analysis, McCain would need to win nine of the battleground states still in play to capture the presidency. Most political observers say there are as many as 14 battleground states in play this election and those states comprise a few Western states, most of the industrial Midwest and four states on the lower Atlantic coast. In the latest analysis, it appears Obama has solid leads in a handful of states that have gone Democrat in the most recent elections. McCain has hoped to compete in places like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, New Hampshire and Wisconsin. Those are trending to Obama now. That leaves the following states in the battleground category still in play: Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Georgia, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. Until lately, most of them have solidly been in the McCain corner. There are six reasons for McCain to find good news in this list of states. Full story at LifeNews.com.

Pregnancy Centers Could Face National Attack if Barack Obama Wins
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Pregnancy centers across the country that provide women with abortion alternatives could be shut down or face severe regulations if Barack Obama wins next month. That's because a bill targeting pregnancy centers could easily be approved in a pro-abortion Congress and land on Obama's desk. Obama has already promised pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood and NARAL that he will be their lap dog in the White House and these are the groups leading the effort to pass the bill. Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey reintroduced the bill in April in the Senate and issued a statement alleging that pregnancy centers mislead women by giving them information on abortion's risks and alternatives. The so-called "Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women’s Services Act" would place burdensome regulations on pregnancy centers. It would also force the Federal Trade Commission to create and enforce rules to prohibit deceptive practices that pregnancy centers say they never use to reach women -- such as advertising under the "abortion services" section of the phone book. Leading Pollster: Presidential Race Far From Over, McCain Can Come Back
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pollster who made his reputation for correctly predicting the outcome of previous presidential elections says this year's campaign is far from over. John Zogby says the race between John McCain and Barack Obama is still too close to call. Zogby is one of several national pollsters and his daily tracking poll of Americans across the country finds Obama leading 48-45 percent, which is within the margin of error. “I don’t think Obama has closed the deal yet,” Zogby said. Zogby points to the fact that Obama has never held a lead over 50 percent, a sign that a large percentage of voters are still not sold on the idea of Obama as president. He believes there is a large group of undecided voters -- especially in battleground states -- that could break McCain's way if they ultimately feel Obama is not yet ready to be president or lacks the experience McCain has for a tumultuous economic time. Assisted Suicide Backers Have 600K to Spend in Washington for Ballot Measure
Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) -- While most of the nation and the pro-life community is focused on the presidential race, residents of Washington are concerned their state may become the second in the country to legalize assisted suicide. Backers have raised substantial amounts of money for it and still have over $600,000 left to spend. The political action committee of the pro-euthanasia group Compassion & Choices has a war chest of $627,500 that stands ready to be spent in the final weeks of the campaign. The local group promoting Initiative 1000 has received most of its money from its fellow euthanasia group and eight out of state donors. While assisted suicide backers claim the Catholic Church and pro-life groups are pouring money into the state, the pro-assisted suicide group has raised $2.647 million compared to just $847,447 for the Coalition Against Assisted Suicide. Brian Johnston, the head of the California Pro-Life Council and an author of a seminal book on assisted suicide, urges pro-life advocates to get involved in the debate in Washington. "Because of the importance of the Presidential race, what is happening in Washington is under the radar, but it should not be ignored by pro-life voters," he told LifeNews.com. "Most of the pro-death support is coming from out of state. We should do the same." Full story at LifeNews.com

President Bush Signs Bill to Help Reduce Abortions on Disabled Unborn Children
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Bush has signed another pro-life bill and this time the legislation focuses on reducing the number of abortions done on disabled unborn children. With research showing figures as high as 90% for the number of disabled babies becoming victims of abortion, the new law is sorely needed. The Pre-natally and Post-natally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act is designed to help reduce the number of abortions of babies with Down syndrome and other conditions. The legislation would require giving families who receive a diagnosis of Down syndrome or any other condition, pre-natally or up until a year after birth, pertinent helpful information. The information would include facts about the condition and connections to support services and networks that could offer assistance in raising a disabled child. Senator Sam Brownback was the prime sponsor of the bill in the Senate and he told LifeNews.com he's delighted President Bush put his signature on it. “President Bush signed into law a bill that will help an untold number of expecting parents who learn that their unborn child may be born with a disability,” he said. “This is a great victory for the culture of life we should all seek to promote," Brownback added. "Currently, 90 percent of children pre-natally diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. That number is much too high and suggests that we as a society are not doing everything we can to protect every human life, at every stage.” Full story at LifeNews.com

Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Exhibit Celebrates Abortion Advocates
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new exhibit at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery celebrates women's contributions to America but honors a handful of abortion advocates. The exhibit touts Margaret Sanger, the founder of the nation's largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood, and others. The federally-funded photography exhibit, “Women of our Time: Twentieth-Century Photography,” features 90 women who are “significant to 20th century America.” Exhibit curator Ann Shumard responded to questions from CNS News about why the exhibit honors Sanger, who has been criticized over the years for racist and eugenic views. “We are looking to represent individuals who have had a significant impact on the nation as a whole" and have been “significant figures in their chosen fields," she said. The Smithsonian exhibit also features other abortion advocates -- including Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem. ACTION: Send your complaints about the exhibit to the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, P.O. Box 37012, Victor Building–Suite 4100 MRC 973, Washington, DC 20013-7012. You can call (202) 633-8300 or phone the director at (202) 633-8276. You can fax the gallery at (202) 633-8243. Full story at LifeNews.com

Abortion Practitioner Morgentaler Recieves Order of Canada Award Friday
Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- Infamous abortion practitioner Henry Morgentaler has been slated to receive the Order of Canada award for weeks and new of that has sparked national outrage. On Friday, the man whose actions led to legal abortions across Canada will finally receive the medal. The Governor General's office, which bestows the award, said a ceremony will be held in Quebec City. The office applauded Morgentaler in a press release for having "a major impact on Canadian public policy" and putting himself "at risk in his determined drive to increase health-care options for Canadian women." It claims Morgentaler has "heightened awareness of women's reproductive health issues among medical professionals and the Canadian public." Not everyone sees the man who opened up Canada to legal abortions in 1988 as the saint the way the Governor General's office does. Denise Mountenay, the head of the Canada Silent No More Campaign, a group for women who have had abortions and regret their decisions because of physical complications or mental health issues afterwards, told LifeNews.com she is disappointed. Pro-Life Petition to United Nations Beats Pro-Abortion Petition by 40-1 Count
New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- Abortion advocates operating on an international scale outpace the pro-life movement financially, but not when it comes to the support of real people. A leading pro-life group has proved that by outpacing its pro-abortion opponents 40-1 in a petition campaign slated for the United Nations in December. The British-based abortion business Marie Stopes International launched a petition effort and, after a year of campaigning, only gathered 500 signatures. MSI now reportedly has just 650, but that pales in comparison to the 26,000 the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute has compiled. Writing in the organization's Friday Fax, C-FAM staffer Samantha Singson says MSI has brought in so few signatures from abortion advocates that it has removed an imagine on its web site keeping track of the numbers. Singson says the C-FAM petition "has generated a massive response from concerned pro-lifers from around the globe." Full story at LifeNews.com

Post-Abortion Outreach Launches New York Subway Ads to Reach Wounded
New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- New York City has more abortion businesses than most states in the country and more abortions are done there than about half of the states combined. It's no wonder that a new post-abortion outreach has chosen New York as a place to launch a new ad campaign to reach victims of abortion. Michaelene Fredenburg, a post-abortive woman who is the author of the new book Changed: Making Sense of Your Own or a Loved One's Abortion Experience, says the ad campaign is meant to move beyond the politics of abortion. "The political language surrounding abortion can pick at tender wounds," she tells LifeNews.com. It can be an extremely difficult time for someone like myself who has been there." Fredenburg created the Abortion Changes You outreach as a safe place away from politics, labels and debate to meet the needs of men and women who have shared their abortion stories, and their frustration with the cultural climate, with her. Catholic Pro-Life Group for Young Adults Urges Prayer for Upcoming Election
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new pro-life group for young Catholics is urging prayer and sacrifice in the weeks leading up to the election with the hopes the prayers will yield leaders who are sensitive to the destruction of human life via abortion. Sacrifices for Life invites people to pray from now until Election Day. This initiative is a pro-life effort to rally Christians to make daily sacrifices for the cause of restoring a culture of life in America. The group hopes to help turn the tide against abortion and other anti-life practices that are threatening to destroy the family, and ultimately, society itself. "The upcoming election is crucial for the pro-life movement in this country," Diana Roccograndi, Sacrifices for Life founder, tells LifeNews.com. "Many of us are praying and working to elect pro-life candidates who will fight to uphold our family values - our prayers and works will be more powerful when united with sacrifice." Concerns About California Embryonic Stem Cell Research Vote Come to Pass
by Jennifer Lahl
When I read Jeff Sheehy's quote in the May 2008 Nature article on “The $3-Billion- Dollar Question”, I knew we were doomed. Sheehy, responding to the megabillion give-away of Prop. 71 funds by the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), asked a simple question: “We're going to make a lot of rich people richer. Why don't we cure somebody?” Good point from Mr. Sheehy, a CIRM insider who serves on the Independent Citizen's Oversight Committee. Really though, I knew we were duped back in November, 2004, when Californians were sold a bunch of hype under the banner of the “California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act.” It wasn't long after Prop. 71 passed that the ‘Cures for California' mantra quieted and risk management and damage control began with more optimistic and realistic goals being pushed onto unsuspecting voters. We were now being told cures would be hard to come by. Cures could be decades away. Full story at LifeNews.com
