Pro-Life Group Challenges Matthew 25 Network on Obama, Abortion Reduction
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pro-life group that launched a new set of radio ads yesterday that show how presidential candidate Barack Obama will sign a bill that would overturn pro-life laws nationwide is challenging another group that supports Obama and claims he favors reducing abortions. The Family Research Council ads discuss the so-called Freedom of Choice Act, a measure that would make a new national law allowing abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason. It would go further by overturning the abortion limits in all 50 states and Obama told Planned Parenthood last July that he would make signing the bill his first action as president. FRC officials told LifeNews.com on Tuesday that the ads are not only meant to expose Obama's position favoring unlimited abortions but to take on the Matthew 25 Network. That's the organization run by a Democratic activists that recently launched a web site falsely claiming Obama is pro-life. FRC president Tony Perkins tells LifeNews.com that its new ad campaign "is a response to the Matthew 25 initiative, which sought to mislead voters and downplay Obama's extreme pro-abortion views." Perkins concluded: "The FOCA Act would make partial-birth abortion legal again, repeal all parental notice laws on abortion, provide unlimited tax funding of abortion. For most Americans, these issues are settled but not for Senator Obama." Full story at LifeNews.com

Catholic Bishops Make It Clear: Abortion The Number One Election Issue
Dallas, TX (LifeNews.com) -- Two Catholic bishops in Texas have released what pro-life advocates there are saying is one of the most direct statements about the upcoming elections. The bishop make it clear that voters should make abortion the number one issue in the elections because it has destroyed and injured tens of millions of lives. Dallas Bishop Kevin Farrell and Fort Worth Bishop Kevin Vann issued a joint statement to "provide clear guidance on the proper formation of conscience concerning voting as faithful Catholics and to articulate." They hope to clear up some of the misconception surrounding the Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship that backers of pro-abortion presidential candidate Barack Obama have used to justify voting for him. "Not all issues have the same moral equivalence," the bishops state -- singling out abortion and destructive practices like euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research. “We cannot make more clear the seriousness of the overriding issue of abortion – while not the 'only issue' – it is the defining moral issue, not only today, but of the last 35 years.” While some pro-life advocates who back Obama cite other political issues or claim that Obama will somehow reduce abortions despite opposing every law that limits abortions, the bishops say otherwise. Pro-Life Woman Complains Obama Pro-Abortion, Gets Secret Service Visit
Lufkin, TX (LifeNews.com) -- A pro-life woman who received an unsolicited phone call from the Barack Obama campaign complained about his pro-abortion position. The call earned her a visit from the Secret Service, who were apparently given erroneous information from the campaign volunteer that she made a death threat. Jessica Hughes of Texas says she received a phone call last Wednesday from a woman with the Obama Volunteers of Texarkana. She said: "She asked if I was an Obama supporter, to which I replied, 'No, I don't support him. Your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the state Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets; I think you should find something better to do with your time.' (And then) I hung up." Hughes was referring to bills in the Illinois legislature that Obama opposed that would have required medical personnel to provide appropriate medical care for babies who survive failed abortions. Her comment about abortion was apparently changed by the Obama volunteer and reported to the Secret Service, who are protecting both presidential candidates. Two federal agents showed up at Hughes' home on Thursday and asked her if she has said, "I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor." Hughes said she is upset the Obama campaign would allege she had made a death threat and is considering filing a complaint. Full story at LifeNews.com

Poll: 60 Percent Oppose All, Most Abortions; 28% of "Pro-Choice" are Pro-Life
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new national poll of Americans finds a large majority take one of three pro-life positions opposing all or most abortions. The survey also finds more than one-quarter of people who say they are "pro-choice" on abortion really take a pro-life position against abortions. The Marist College Institute of Public Opinion conducted the survey. Some 60 percent of Americans say abortions should never be allowed or only in the rarest of circumstances, such as rape and incest, that constitution less than two percent of all abortions nationwide. The Marist survey showed 13 percent say abortion should never be permitted, another 15 percent say abortions should only be allowed to save the life of the mother, and 32 percent say abortions should be allowed in that rare case and when the mother is a victim of rape or incest. Just 40 percent took one of three pro-abortion positions and only 8 percent agreed with Barack Obama's position that abortions should be allowed any time during pregnancy for any reason. The results showed the terms pro-life and "pro-choice" are confusing to a large percentage of Americans. Even though the survey found 60 percent of respondents took a pro-life position against all or most abortions, 50 percent of Americans called themselves "pro-choice" while 44 percent said they were pro-life. New York Times Writer Wrongly Suggests Palin May Have Considered Abortion
by Bill Hobbs
Patrick Healy's "Political Memo" today in the New York Times portrays Sarah and Todd Palin as pro-choice by misreporting what the Alaska governor said recently about when she was pregnant with son Trig. Healey's characterization of the remarks is inaccurate - and betrays a pro-choice mindset that is the default setting for most journalists in the elite media. What Palin said was, in summary, when she and Todd learned that their unborn child, Trig, would have Down Syndrome, they were scared, yes, but they moved immediately to prepare for the challenge ahead, including through prayer: "I had to prepare my heart for the challenges to come. At first I was scared, and Todd and I had to ask for strength and understanding." Healy portrays it as the Palins struggling with the decision of whether or not to have Trig or abort him: "She and her husband, Todd, talked, prayed, reflected and ultimately decided to have the child." Humane Society Endorses Barack Obama, Says Nothing of Abortion Victims
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
Animal rights advocates are quick to condemn pro-life advocates for not supporting their agenda for the protection of animals. Yet, a recent move by the Humane Society reveals why many pro-life advocates have misgivings -- as it endorsed the candidate who many consider the most pro-abortion in history. The Humane Society Legislative Fund issued an endorsement for Barack Obama, who supports abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason and has been criticized for opposing anti-infanticide bills in the Illinois legislature. "The Obama-Biden ticket is the far better choice on animal protection," the group says, adding that it only "evaluates candidates based on a single criterion: where they stand on animal protection policies." For Jill Stanek, the nurse who exposed the born-alive abortion practice leading to the bills Obama opposed, that's an understatement. "The disconnect is insane," Stanek says in response. She said she can't understand how Obama can support humane treatment for animals but not for unborn children, including those who could become victims of partial-birth abortion. ABC Denies Second Pro-Life Ad After Rejecting Obama Abortion Expose'
bNew York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- After rejecting a radio commercial exposing Barack Obama's pro-abortion position, the ABC network has rejected a second ad. This one, sponsored by the Caring Outreach, has nothing to do with politics but is a 30-second television ad that features information on fetal development. The group put together an ad entitled 85 Days that depicts intrauterine photos of an unborn baby in the first months of life. The group tells LifeNews.com that the ad was slated to air on the Oprah program this month, but it has yet to appear during the program. Jean Synovic, a representative of the Caring Outreach, tells LifeNews.com that ABC, without citing any scientific or medical sources, claimed that the images used in the commercial were not that of an unborn child at 85 days gestation, as the ad states. Synovic says her group directed ABC officials to medical documentation that verifies the accuracy of the images and informed the network that the ad was aired on three other ABC affiliates in Wisconsin and Maine.

Abortion Business Owner Who Killed Baby in Apparent Infanticide Gets Lawsuit
Miami, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The owner of a south Florida abortion business who killed an unborn child in an apparent infanticide has become the subject of a civil lawsuit. The case involves an unborn baby who was injured in an attempted abortion and whose body was placed on the abortion center's roof to avoid detection from authorities. The incident involved a baby, who was later named Shanice Denise Osbourne, and who was supposed to become a victim of abortion at the GYN Diagnostic Center abortion facility in Hialeah, outside Miami. According to witnesses, a young woman went to GYN for an abortion. Police say the 18 year-old returned the next day complaining of severe stomach pains. Abortion facility staff told her the abortion practitioner was not available and that she would have to wait. After being taken to a waiting area, the woman allegedly gave birth to the baby that she thought had been aborted the day before. Abortion center owner Belkis Gonzalez, a woman with no medical background, delivered the African-American baby girl. An autopsy indicated that the baby's lungs contained gas bubbles and floated, proving that Shanice was alive and breathing at birth. Full story at LifeNews.com

Australia Euthanasia Group Funds Backers of Washington Assisted Suicide Vote
Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) -- The amount of money is barely enough to notice in a campaign where assisted suicide backers are spending millions to make Washington the second state to legalize assisted suicide. However, an Australian pro-euthanasia group has donated over $4,000 to the campaign for Initiative 1000. The group backing I-1000 has a $3.2 million warchest and will be spending over $1 million during the final weeks of the campaign. Included in that is a donation of $4,138 from Death with Dignity Victoria, a local pro-euthanasia group in the Australian state that includes Melbourne. Donations from out of state have been a problem in the campaign, but not yet from out of the nation. As LifeNews.com previously noted, the local group promoting Initiative 1000 has received most of its money from its fellow euthanasia group and eight out of state donors, including an Ohio resident. Fordham University Gives Award to Pro-Abortion Supreme Court Judge Breyer
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Fordham University, a Catholic educational institution is coming under fire for a decision to bestow an award on pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. Opposition is so profound that more than 1,100 Fordham University alumni and students have signed a petition opposing the plan. William Michael Treanor, dean of Fordham Law, said in a statement on the college web site announcing the award that “Justice Breyer has devoted his life to the public good." "As a jurist, his opinions have been marked by thoughtfulness, balance, rigor, and a commitment to justice and liberty," he said. Justice Breyer wrote the majority opinion in the 2000 case striking down state laws banning partial-birth abortions. Nevertheless, Fordham is still scheduled to present its Fordham-Stein Ethics Prize to Justice Breyer at a dinner in New York City on October 29. Full story at LifeNews.com

Abortion Boat Headed to Spain for Free Abortions Despite Legal Status
Madrid, Spain (LifeNews.com) -- The pro-abortion group Women on Waves is taking its dangerous abortion boat to Spain even though abortions are already legal there. Typically the organization goes only to nations where abortions are prohibited in order to do abortions or give women dangerous drugs to cause them. In an email LifeNews.com obtained, WOW claims more than 30 organizations in Spain invited it to bring the abortion board. It says it will arrive in Valencia on Thursday and will stay for six days. "Catholic groups are already trying to stop the ship from entering," the organization said. Technically, in Spain, abortion is only legal in case the pregnancy supposedly is a threat to the physical or mental health of the woman (despite the fact abortions typically cause medical and mental health issues). Euthanasia Advocate Displays Death Bag to Britons, Promotes Lethal Drugs
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- Australia euthanasia advocate Philip Nitschke is coming under criticism from pro-life advocates in Britain who are upset that he is bringing his message there. Nitschke reportedly displayed a suffocation bag at a public meeting in London yesterday. He is also alleged to have told participants how to get poisonous drugs. Nitschke met with a group of elderly citizens and explained in minute detail how they could kill themselves by obtaining drugs such as a veterinary medicine from Mexico or using an "Exit bag" to suffocate themselves to death. He explained how drug-sniffing dogs at airports in Mexico apparently have not caught on to the scent of the drug and people traveling there to purchase it have not had issues. Meanwhile, Nitschke's promoted his book The Peaceful Pill, a do-it-yourself handbook that contains the same instructions for suicide and which is banned in Australia. He launched a new online version that he debuted in England at the meeting. Full story at LifeNews.com
