Barack Obama's Abortion Extremism Makes Him the Most Pro-Abortion Ever
by Robert George
Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion candidate ever to seek the office of President of the United States. He is the most extreme pro-abortion member of the United States Senate. Indeed, he is the most extreme pro-abortion legislator ever to serve in either house of the United States Congress. Yet there are Catholics and Evangelicals-even self-identified pro-life Catholics and Evangelicals - who aggressively promote Obama's candidacy and even declare him the preferred candidate from the pro-life point of view. What is going on here? I have examined the arguments advanced by Obama's self-identified pro-life supporters, and they are spectacularly weak. It is nearly unfathomable to me that those advancing them can honestly believe what they are saying. But before proving my claims about Obama's abortion extremism, let me explain why I have described Obama as ''pro-abortion'' rather than ''pro-choice.'' For starters, he supports legislation that would repeal the Hyde Amendment, which protects pro-life citizens from having to pay for abortions that are not necessary to save the life of the mother and are not the result of rape or incest. But this barely scratches the surface of Obama's extremism. He has promised that ''the first thing I'd do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act'' (known as FOCA). This proposed legislation would create a federally guaranteed ''fundamental right'' to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Full story at LifeNews.com

Top Nonpartisan Polls Show Obama With 4-5 Percent Lead Over John McCain
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- While some presidential surveys are showing results that appear significantly out of the realm of possibility, two top nonpartisan polls are showing a close presidential race on the day of the third debate. A Zogby poll shows Barack Obama with a 3.8 percent lead while a Rasmussen poll has McCain down five. The Zogby poll, which has correctly predicted the results of previous presidential elections, has shown Obama losing ground during the last three days of its tracking poll. Obama now leads McCain by a 48.2% to 44.4% margin, an advantage of 3.8 percentage points. This comes after leading by 6.2 percentage points the day before. Today's polling report from Zogby shows McCain gained 1.6 percentage points, while Obama lost 0.8 percentage points. Meanwhile, the Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll for Wednesday shows Obama with a 50-45 percentage point lead. That’s the fourth straight day with identical numbers and the twentieth straight day that Obama’s support has stayed in the narrow range from 50% to 52% while McCain has been at 44% of 45%. Two percent of voters say they will vote for “some other candidate” and 3% remain undecided. For McCain, the encouraging news comes from core supporters—those who are certain how they will vote and that they will not change their mind. Just 42% are certain they will vote for Obama while 40% say the same about McCain. Full story at LifeNews.com.

NARAL Accuses John McCain of OKing Women Dying From Illegal Abortions
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Leading pro-abortion group NARAL is going a little further than fellow abortion advocates with a new email on Wednesday accusing John McCain of being okay with women dying from illegal abortions. The email makes no mention of the fact that women are killed and injured by legal abortions.
With the eerie headline, "Does John McCain Understand Women Could Die?" the NARAL email features doctored photos of McCain and pro-life Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
NARAL features a transcript of remarks of John McCain from an interview with Meet the Press in 2000 where he indicated he was okay with a constitutional amendment to ban abortions. Told that "hundreds of thousands of women a year went to back alleys to have abortions," McCain said he understood that line or argument. The only problem with the transcript and the NARAL assumption is that it is completely false. The argument that hundreds of thousands of women died in illegal abortions prior to the Roe v. Wade decision, which allowed virtually unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason, is untrue. NARAL's own co-founder, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, admits the organization lied about the number of women who died from legal abortions when testifying before the Supreme Court in 1972. "We spoke of 5,000 - 10,000 deaths a year.... I confess that I knew the figures were totally false ... it was a useful figure, widely accepted, so why go out of our way to correct it with honest statistics?" he said. Full story at LifeNews.com

Poll Finds Majority of Catholics Pro-Life on Abortion, Favor Parental Notification
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll finds that a majority of Catholics take a pro-life position and that almost one-third of Catholic voters who say they are "pro-choice" on abortion actually oppose all or most abortions. The poll also found support for parental notification and pro-life candidates. As LifeNews.com profiled yesterday, 60 percent of Americans take one of three pro-life positions while just 40 percent take one of three pro-abortion positions and just 8 percent share the abortion position of Barack Obama. The Marist College poll also had other interesting results, including showing a majority of Catholics are pro-life. When asked to define themselves as pro-life or "pro-choice," 49 percent of Catholics say they are pro-life while 48 percent say they're not. As with Americans as a whole, the self-identification question includes significant limitations because many Catholics who say they are "pro-choice" actually take a pro-life position on abortion. The Marist survey found 63 percent of Catholics say abortions should be permitted in none or almost no cases by opposing all abortions, all abortions except to save the mother's life, or all abortions except to save the mother's life or in cases of rape or incest. Pro-Life Group to Schieffer: Give McCain, Obama Abortion Debate Question
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- As CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer prepares to moderate Wednesday night's final presidential candidate debate, one leading pro-life advocates hopes he will ask a question about abortion. Charmaine Yoest, the president of Americans United for Life, says it would help educate voters. Yoest send LifeNews.com a copy of an open letter she wrote to Schieffer asking him to make abortion part of the debate. "As you prepare for Wednesday night's final presidential debate, I know that you will be working to raise questions on domestic issues that are of interest to a wide range of Americans," she wrote. "I encourage you to ask each candidate about his views on abortion -- something that has not been done at either of the previous debates." Yoest said the topic is important because a sizable number of Americans are either single issue voters based on the abortion issue or include abortion as one of the top issues they use to evaluate the candidates. Yoest has a specific question in mind -- which gets to the divide between John McCain, who has a 96 percent pro-life voting record according to NARAL and Barack Obama, who opposes any law to reduce abortions. "This is the question I encourage you to ask: What restrictions on abortion would you support in order to achieve the widely agreed upon goal of reducing the number of abortions in our country?" Catholics United Still Misleading Voters on McCain, Obama Abortion Contrast
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
Catholics United is at it again and, this time, the front group for the Barack Obama campaign is preparing to mail 50,000 Catholic voters in Pennsylvania and Ohio campaign literature that blurs the stark contrast between Obama and John McCain on abortion issues. The piece asks voters to consider "the real meaning of 'pro-life' at the ballot box this November and obfuscates the fact that Obama supports legal abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason. “It’s time for Catholics and other people of faith to take a serious look at whether some avowed ‘pro-life’ candidates really have a record to run on,” Chris Korzen, director of Catholics United told LifeNews.com in a press release. The organization indirectly criticizes John McCain for not taking a pro-life position on abortion, yet offers no specifics on how that is the case. In fact, Korzen, in his criticism of McCain and other pro-life candidates, relies on other political issues to make his case and never identifies any McCain policy increasing or supporting abortions. At the same time, neither Catholics United nor the direct mail piece Catholic voters will receive offers any information on Obama's support for taxpayer-funded abortions, his votes in the Illinois legislature against an anti-infanticide bill, or Obama's backing a measure overturning the pro-life laws of all 50 states.

Majority of Doctors Say Focus on Adult Stem Cells, Embryonic Concerns Valid
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll of physicians finds a majority say they favor the use of adult stem cell research only or believe it could be a way to avoid the ethical debate surrounding the use of embryonic stem cells. Another majority say they have concerns about the moral status of embryonic research or that concerns are valid. The Jackson & Coker Industry Report conducted the survey of 550 doctors and medical professionals during September. The poll found 66 percent indicated stem cell research should include embryonic stem cells while 24% were strongly opposed to this line of research. But, that wasn't the end of the debate. Some 55 percent of those polled believe that there are valid concerns about embryonic stem cell research on the premise that "it's creating life to destroy life" (20 percent) or that both sides of the ethical debate deserve to be addressed (35 percent). Just 44 percent indicated there is no valid concern. Meanwhile, 35 percent of those polled worried embryonic stem cell research has the possibility of being a "slippery slope" that can possibly lead to human cloning or some other form of extraordinary genetic manipulation. California Group to Air Debate Ad Promoting Parental Notification on Abortion
Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The organization behind the third attempt at getting California voters to approve a ballot measure to support parental notification before an abortion is airing an ad during tonight's presidential debate. The ad will run during local broadcasts 90-minute Obama-McCain presidential debate at Hofstra University. The Yes on 4 campaign has purchased air time tonight on California television stations to debut a new 30-second ad, "Sorry to Burst Your Bubble," which takes direct aim at Planned Parenthood and its so-called "Bubble Ad." The new Yes on 4 ad pans into a Planned Parenthood abortion business with floating bubbles that burst as the truth about Planned Parenthood's failure to report the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old California girl by a 39-year-old man is revealed. "A 13-year-old girl was raped over a hundred times by a 39 year old man," the narrator says. "When she got pregnant he took her to Planned Parenthood -- twice. Her mother didn't know." "He took her from school for a surgical abortion," the ad continues. "Her mother didn't know." Full story at LifeNews.com

Colorado Pro-Life Advocates Launch Ads for Abortion-Personhood Measure
Denver, CO (LifeNews.com) -- The pro-life advocates who are supporting Amendment 48, the November ballot measure that would define human life beginning at conception, rolled out their final campaign to support the initiative. The Yes on 48 Campaign released their first statewide television and radio ads. Titled, "Greed," the ads focus on the reasons for the lies and deceit coming from pro-abortion opponents of Amendment 48 and the radical special interest funding these groups are trying to maintain. The ads began running in television and radio markets across the state today. "Sadly, the groups opposed to Amendment 48 are lying and deceiving voters in a greedy attempt to hold on to their million dollar businesses. We've seen their hysterical scare tactics many times before but this time voters are wise," Kristi Burton, who started the Amendment 48 initiative, told LifeNews.com. The ads address the millions of dollars that Boulder-based late-term abortion practitioner Warren Hern has made over the years and why he refuses to acknowledge the truth about when life begins. Iowa Abortion Center Marks 35 Years Hurting Women and Children in Abortions
Iowa City, IA (LifeNews.com) -- An eastern Iowa abortion business is marking 35 years of doing abortions, but one leading pro-life advocate says all the Emma Goldman Clinic has to show for itself is a history of hurting women and children and preying on the college students at the University of Iowa. The Emma Goldman Clinic abortion center is planning a gala event on Thursday night to mark the occasion. It's web site describes the abortion facility as the first in Iowa -- with abortions coming just nine months after the Supreme Court handed down its Roe v. Wade decision allowing virtually unlimited abortions any time in pregnancy. The event is expected to focus on the namesake founder of the abortion center and Candace Falk, director of the Emma Goldman Papers, an archive of papers on Goldman located at the University of California-Berkeley, will be the featured speaker. Kim Lehman, the president of Iowa Right to Life, tells LifeNews.com there is nothing to celebrate. "If success is measured by the number of unborn children killed, then Emma Goldman can brag to their abortion supporters that in their college town, Iowa City, they have achieved the highest rate of abortions in the U.S. per capita," she explained.
