Archbishop Charles Chaput to Douglas Kmiec: Saying Obama Pro-Life is Wrong
by Archbishop Charles Chaput
Prof. Kmiec has a strong record of service to the Church and the nation in his past. He served in the Reagan administration, and he supported Mitt Romney's campaign for president before switching in a very public way to Barack Obama earlier this year. In his own book he quotes from Render Unto Caesar at some length. In fact, he suggests that his reasoning and mine are ''not far distant on the moral inquiry necessary in the election of 2008.'' Unfortunately, he either misunderstands or misuses my words, and he couldn't be more mistaken. I believe that Senator Obama, whatever his other talents, is the most committed ''abortion-rights'' presidential candidate of either major party since the Roe v. Wade abortion decision in 1973. Despite what Prof. Kmiec suggests, the party platform Senator Obama runs on this year is not only aggressively ''pro-choice;'' it has also removed any suggestion that killing an unborn child might be a regrettable thing. On the question of homicide against the unborn child - and let's remember that the great Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer explicitly called abortion ''murder'' - the Democratic platform that emerged from Denver in August 2008 is clearly anti-life. Prof. Kmiec argues that there are defensible motives to support Senator Obama. Speaking for myself, I do not know any proportionate reason that could outweigh more than 40 million unborn children killed by abortion and the many millions of women deeply wounded by the loss and regret abortion creates. Pro-Life Movement May Lose for Decades at Supreme Court With Barack Obama
by Richard John Neuhaus
I admit to being more impressed than most commentators, including those with whom I usually agree, with the Wednesday night debate between Senators Obama and McCain. Political punditry is not my main shtick, and I have no idea whether the debate will contribute significantly to, as the pundits say, "turning this around." But it seemed to me that McCain was sharp, on point, and playing offense, while Obama was for the first time on the edge of losing his famed cool and, at points, was floundering. McCain's quip about the comparative merits of "eloquence" and paying attention to "words" seemed to hit home. This was strikingly evident in the responses to the abortion question, which, for the first time, was directly posed in these debates. McCain's effort was to depict Obama as an abortion extremist, and he succeeded. On partial-birth abortion and providing medical care for infants who survive abortion, Obama was reduced to muttering about a "health exception," which, as he surely knows, means that the abortion license is, in fact, totally unlimited since the denial of a woman's desire to terminate the life of the infant is construed as a violation of her "psychological health." Eduardo Verástegui: The Hispanic Community's New Pro-Life Face on Abortion
by Rai Rojas
Eduardo Verástegui stars in a different kind of film these days, different from the ones Im sure he had once envisioned.
Earlier in his career the Mexican-born actor was a sensation on Latin American telenovelas, he crossed over into American movies in a romantic comedy Chasing Papi, and with that success a future in Hollywood was sure to be his. But a funny thing happened to Eduardo on his way to fame and fortunehe faced his conscience and his God. I met Eduardo in March 2006 at a pro-life conference held in Mexico City. I was surprised that not only did he attend the meetings, but that he was such an active participant. At the end of the conference, many of us rode in vans to a small theater where we were shown the movie Bella, screened for the first time for anyone outside the production staff. Bella has gone on to win numerous awards and prizes and has landed Eduardo back in the center of Latino pop culture. He has been featured in numerous magazines, is often seen at premieres, and is a much sought-after speaker. But it is his most recent project that has caught the attention of so many in the media. Recently, the Archdiocese of New York held its famous Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, with both Senators John McCain and Barack Obama as guests. I watched the coverage today -- the story is all over the news, along with images of Obama and Edward Cardinal Egan sharing a laugh. Something about that bothered me. No, it's not what you think. I'm not upset that a Democrat and the cardinal were enjoying a conversation. This is not a partisan issue, and I would have had the same negative reaction if it were Rudy Giuliani or Susan Collins instead of Obama. The truth is, the first thought that came to my mind was a simple one: What are we doing here? If abortion really is what we say it is -- the gruesome murder of unborn children -- do our actions reflect that belief? And if those who support abortion are guilty of facilitating such a horror, how should we respond to them? If this were 1855, would we be inviting pro-slavery politicians to take a break from a hard fought race, and share a laugh and a meal? As one who finds courage and inspiration in the example of the Radical Republican abolitionists, I just can't imagine it. Full story at LifeNews.com| Powerful Video, Christmas Cards |

Prominent Black Pro-Life Leaders Endorse McCain, Not Obama, Over Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a powerful video with personal testimonials, key black pro-life leaders, including Dr. Alveda C. King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., talk about how their faith influences the policies and politics they support. These black Americans state eloquently why they support Sen. John McCain and cannot, in good conscience, support Barack Obama. A primary reason cited by these black American leaders is Obama's radical position on abortion, including the fact that Obama voted four times in the Illinois Senate against the bill that would provide health care to babies born alive after a botched abortion. Why is the issue of abortion so important to black American leaders? Black communities are being devastated by abortion which is tantamount to black genocide, they say. Some 35% of abortions in the United States are performed on African-American women, while they represent only 12% of the nation's female population. According to the 2000 Census, 14 million (17 million as of 2007) African-American children have been killed through abortion. This means that more African-American babies have been killed by abortion during the past 30 years than the total number of African-American deaths from all other causes combined, including AIDS, heart disease, cancer, violent crimes and accidents. Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey Still Apologizing for Obamas Pro-Abortion Views
Harrisburg, PA (LifeNews.com) -- Pennsylvania senator Bob Casey has come under fire from pro-life advocates for compromising his pro-life views by endorsing Barack Obama. The criticism came to a head at the Democratic convention when Casey gave a speech endorsing Obama and making the claim that he would reduce abortions despite taking a position favoring the reversal of every pro-life law limiting abortions across the country. Asked this weekend by a local newspaper if he had to grapple with Obamas pro-abortion beliefs, Casey said hes had to make a determination like that in other races when I was supporting other candidates who are pro-choice. We have a disagreement on that issue, but I do think theres a lot of common ground that can be achieved.
I think that when you look at both candidates, I think theres no question that Sen. Obama will be a much more effective president to help pregnant women, which is not only the right thing to do, but I think is one of the ways maybe the only way in the short run where you can actually reduce the number of abortions, which is something everyone agrees on. With Obama supporting abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason, Caseys claims appear dubious.

British MP Wants to Allow Girls as Young as 12 to Have Dangerous Abortion Drug
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- A British member of Parliament ants girls as young as 12 to be allowed to get the dangerous abortion drug RU 486 without parental knowledge or permission. Liberal Democrat member Evan Harris believes the mifepristone abortion drug should be able to be used up to 19 weeks into pregnancy even though it is advised only for use about seven or eight weeks into pregnancy. Tory MP Nadine Dorries, a former nurse who wants to reduce the abortion time limit, told the British media she is upset by the proposal. We are talking about young girls who will go home and abort on their own, she said. Women who are aborting should be in an environment where they can be given advice, reassurance and adequate pain relief. Harris proposal comes in the form of an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill which returns to the Commons this week for more debate. More abortions are done in England than anywhere in Europe because of its more liberal abortion laws compared to most other countries.

Uganda First Lady Inquires if Marie Stopes Intl is Doing Abortions There
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- The First Lady of the African nation of Uganda wants to know if the British-based abortion business Marie Stopes International is doing abortions there. Janet Museveni is demanding to know if MSI is doing more than distributing birth control and contraception in her nation. She said she has heard from an American lawmaker that MSI may be doing abortions in her country. I want Marie Stopes to explain what they do in the villages, Museveni said. The young people who get pregnant should be helped to produce instead of helping them to abort. The U.S. government recently decided to de-fund MSI because of the organizations participate in the China family planning policy that includes forced abortions and sterilizations. Over five years ago, the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council closed down Marie Stopes clinics in Uganda for allegedly administering abortions. However, they were allowed to re-open after denying the allegations. Abortions in Uganda are illegal, but some estimates indicate thousands of illegal abortions are done there.
