LA Times: Election Could Decide Future of Roe v. Wade Abortion Case
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Los Angeles Times, in a weekend article, clearly articulated the massive stakes for the pro-life movement in the upcoming presidential election. This is important as Barack Obama has pledged to only appoint pro-abortion judges while John McCain promises jurists who won't make up the law from the bench. The newspaper confirms the importance pro-life groups have placed on the election -- saying that it could determine the fate of legal abortions for decades because of the power the next president will have to shape the Supreme Court. Although some skeptics doubt the impact the presidential election will have, even leading pro-abortion groups agree that the Supreme Court hangs in balance. “Every four years, defenders of abortion rights proclaim that the fate of Roe vs. Wade hangs on the outcome of the presidential election,” the Times said in a Sunday story. “This year, they may be right.” The newspaper notes that “the margin has shrunk to one” when it comes to the pro-abortion majority currently on the Supreme Court. That’s thanks to the judges President Bush put in place -- Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito -- jurists the pro-life community strongly supported. They believe Roberts and Alito will join with Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, who have already issued opinions indicating Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Full story at LifeNews.com

Catholics Misled Who Back Barack Obama Thinking Abortions Will Go Down
by Dave Andrusko

As a non-Catholic, I try to be very cautious when talking about the in-house debate over whether a Catholic can support someone as committed to not only maintaining abortion on demand, but embedding it even deeper in the culture as Sen. Barack Obama. But this topic came up again yesterday when a friend forwarded an entry on the blog of the magazine "America." The author was Prof. Sidney Callahan, whose work I have admired over the years. In her first paragraph, Mrs. Callahan establishes her credentials, downgrades the importance of abortion, and tells her audience why Obama is her candidate. When I finished her entry, I was reminded again of the staggering irony that is at the heart of "Catholics for Obama." They seem to believe that Obama is really a reasonable fellow, with no real investment in abortion, and, if given a quarter of a chance, will "do the right thing"--lead the way toward a "reduction in the number of abortions." The problem is there is absolutely nothing--NOTHING-- in what he's said or done that suggests that Obama would retreat an inch from his extremist position on abortion and lots and lots to show that he's just getting started. More Pro-Life Advocates Say Matthew 25 Network Obama Site False on Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
More pro-life advocates are saying the new Pro-Life, Pro-Obama web site from the Democratic activist group Matthew 25 Network, is false when it comes to portraying Barack Obama's abortion views. Ramesh Ponnuru, a writer with National Review, had this to say: "The Matthew 25 Network—a group of left-wing Christians—has a new site up. They take the standard tack of pro-life Obama supporters. They completely ignore his opposition to parental consent, his support for taxpayer funding of abortion, and the like. What they do include is misleading. They quote Obama's Relevant interview, for example, in which he claimed that late-term abortions should be allowed only for serious medical reasons—a remark that made many people, including me, hope that Obama was moderating on the issue and might be willing to tighten existing law. They don't mention that in subsequent 'clarifying' remarks, Obama took back the concession."

Video Available for Pro-Life Groups on Barack Obama's Extreme Abortion Views
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
A pro-life group has made a video available for pro-life organizations to use at no cost that highlights the extreme pro-abortion views of Barack Obama. The Committee for Truth in Politics is behind the video and it has no disclaimer and is not copyrighted. "Thus, anyone can use it by linking to it or by downloading it. It is a grassroots lobbying ad which contains no express advocacy. It can be used in various ways by any 501(c)(4) group," pro-life attorney James Bopp explains. "You can use it in any other way, as long as you do not put it on television. It can be posted on your web site and linked in e-mails and other communications to your supporters." Bopp says a federal PAC could put this ad on television, with it disclaimer as required by federal election law. "If your organization is qualifies as an MCFL-type corporation, you could also put it on television, with the appropriate disclaimer and by filing appropriate reports with the FEC." The ad is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrtOBespwYg

Catholic University Clarifies Policy on Pro-Abortion Speakers, Candidates
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
The Catholic University of America has clarified their speakers policy, stating that any political candidates must now be approved by the university's president, Rev. David M. O'Connell. The clarification stems from Catholic University's concerns about speakers that would contradict Church teachings on social issues, such as abortion, and also to protect the University's non-profit status. The University un-invited actor and producer Stanley Tucci in 2004, after it was revealed that Tucci's abortion views were contrary to the Catholic Church's teachings. This has lead to greater definition to the University's policy on speakers, which is even more critical regarding political candidates during an election year.

New Blood Test in UK Sparks Fears of Abortions on Disabled Unborn Children
London, England (LifeNews.com) --
A new blood test could be available in the next five years that would identify conditions such as Down's Syndrome and cystic fibrosis as early as seven weeks, igniting fears of designer babies and increased numbers of abortions. Great Britain, where researchers announced the new test, already has more abortions than any other Western European nation with over 200,000 a year. Pro-life leaders are concerned that the test, which can also determine the sex of the child five weeks earlier than current tests, would lead to discrimination. "It does not offer any possibility except the termination of the pregnancy," Josephine Quintavalle, of the pro-life campaign Comment on Reproductive Ethics, told the Mail Online. "This is a pursuit for perfection. Having the right sex of a child will become another quest for perfection. We are getting more information than we know how to handle.'"

Australia Archbishop Denis Hart Hopes to Stop Abortion Law Reform Bill
Melbourne, Australia (LifeNews.com) --
Archbishop Denis Hart of the Archdiocese of Melbourne has issued a pastoral letter in response to the Australian Legislative Assembly's passage of the Abortion Law Reform Bill. The Archbishop called for a Day of Intercession in an attempt to stop the legislation from passing into law, specifically citing the Church's concerns with the legislation. Archbishop Hart called the bill "an unprecedented attack on the freedom to hold and exercise fundamental religious beliefs," pointing out that it "compels a pharmacist or nurse employed or engaged in a public or private hospital or day-procedure center, if directed in writing by a doctor, to administer or to supply a drug to cause an abortion to a female who is more than 24 weeks pregnant," and also "imposes a legal obligation on doctors and nurses, notwithstanding their conscientious objection, to perform an abortion on a female in an emergency where it is deemed that the abortion is necessary to preserve the life of the pregnant woman." Furthermore, the Archbishop explained, the Abortion Law Reform Bill fails to ban partial-birth abortions, to include an informed consent provision, or "to safeguard the health of women by permitting abortions to be performed by doctors who have no qualifications or training in obstetrics." "As one commentator has put it, it is an insidious irony that this coercion of conscience is being carried out in the name of choice," said the Archbishop. "Parliamentarians are being afforded the opportunity to exercise their consciences to remove the right of health professionals to exercise theirs."

Adult Stem Cell Research Helps 8-Year-Old Missouri Girl With Eye Condition
Syracuse, MO (LifeNews.com) --
Savannah Watring, an 8-year-old girl from Syracuse, Missouri was told she would never see more than the difference between light and dark, due to a condition called optic nerve hypoplasia. But when her family took her to China for an experimental adult stem cell treatment, she began to recover her sight after receiving four of the seven prescribed treatments. Doctors had expected her recovery to begin three to six months after the treatment. "It was like, one day she was not seeing anything, and the next day she was seeing the letter E and which way the legs went," said Savannah's aunt, Shonna Millsap. The trip and medical bills were covered by over $50,000 in donations the family received when insurance companies refused to cover the treatment.

Louisiana Legislator’s Sterilization Proposal Opposed by Pro-Life Advocate
Baton Rouge, LA (LifeNews.com) --
Pro-life advocate Dr. Alveda King is reacting to the recent proposal of Louisiana state Rep. John LaBruzzo to offer taxpayer money to poor women and men to be sterilized and to offer tax incentives to higher income people to have more children. “The founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, used to say, ‘More children from the fit, less from the unfit,’” King tells LifeNews.com. “A eugenicist to the core, she would have loved this idea of the government bribing poor people into sterilization. Aside from its being reprehensible, though, we have already seen that this type of plan doesn't eliminate poverty.” “For 35 years, we have offered the poor, especially inner city African Americans, abortion as a solution to their poverty,” added Dr. King. “Can anyone seriously claim that aborting one-third of the current African American population has left blacks better off? You can't improve the present by killing the future. Sterilizing the poor is fighting economic poverty with moral bankruptcy.”

Spain Abortions Increasing, Especially on Teenage Girls, Pro-Life Group Says
Madrid, Spain (LifeNews.com) --
Young women and girls in Spain are becoming the victims of abortion at an alarming rate, according to the Institute for Family Policy in Spain. "Every half hour in Spain a girl under the age of 20 receives an abortion, and each day there is at least one abortion performed on girls under the age of 15 (496 abortions in 2006). In 99.5% of the cases there is a psychological or physical risk for the mother. This data should make us reflect on what is happening," said Eduardo Hertfelder, the Institute's president. Fifty percent of pregnancies in adolescent girls ends in abortion in Spain, according to the Institute, and failure of the morning after pill is "evident," with a direct relationship of the drug's promotion and the increase in the number of abortions. Hertfelder called the Spanish government's policy "erroneous and out-dated," and called for a change in policy regarding the "indiscriminate promotion of the morning after pill among adolescents and of abortion as a solution." According to the IFP, the number of abortions in Spain has more than doubled in the last 10 years, with 97,000 being performed in 2006. In the last four years alone, the number of abortions have increased 35%.

Pope Benedict XVI Tells Uruguay Bishops to Stop Move to Legalize Abortions
Montevideo, Uruguay (LifeNews.com) --
During an audience last week with Uruguay's bishops, Pope Benedict XVI expressed his concerns and prayers that the clergy in the South American country would recognize the dignity of all human life, including the unborn. Last year, the Uruguayan Senate approved legislation that would make abortion legal for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, although the country's president has promised a veto of the bill. Despite the efforts of the local Catholic leaders, poll results from the year prior to the Senate vote showed that a majority of Uruguayans favored the legalization of abortion. Benedict XVI said that he is asking God for "the fruit of establishing a clear awareness in every Uruguayan of the inviolable dignity of every person and a firm commitment to respect and safeguard it without reservations."
