USAID Decision Points to How Barack Obama Would Fund US, Intl Abortions
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Last week, the Bush administration used a national law prohibiting American taxpayer funding of international groups that promote forced abortions to de-fund UK-based Marie Stopes International. The decision points to how the policy could change if Barack Obama becomes president. As LifeNews.com reported, Assistant Administrator for Global Health Dr. Kent Hill banned funding of MSI on the grounds that it is complicit in "coercive abortion and involuntary sterilizations" in China. The Bush administration has also withheld millions of taxpayer dollars from the UNFPA for the same reason -- after the State Department conducted an investigation and found the UN agency lent support to China's one-child policy that involves forced abortions and sterilizations. What would happen to this policy against funding forced abortion-friendly groups should Obama occupy the White House? In April 2005, Obama supported an amendment to nullify the Mexico City Policy, which prevents forcing taxpayers to fund performing or promoting abortions in other nations. Catholic writer Deal Hudson wrote an editorial over the weekend that acknowledges Obama will likely overturn the policies and fund international pro-abortion groups. "Millions of dollars, taxpayer dollars, have been taken away from Planned Parenthood and the United Nations Population Fund," Hudson explained. "If Obama is elected, all this money, and more, will be restored." Full story at LifeNews.com

Pro-Life Advocate: McCain, Obama Clearly Split on Supreme Court, Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- When voters head to the polls next month to make a decision about the next president, a leading pro-life advocate says they will see two candidates with clear abortion differences. Family Research Council president Tony Perkins says they will see two different Supreme Court philosophies, too. As LifeNews.com has noted, John McCain and Barack Obama take two contrasting approaches on both abortion and the direction of the nation's high court when it comes to deciding whether legal abortions should continue for any reason. Perkins noted that difference on Monday in a statement sent to LifeNews.com, saying, "a new season of uncertainty is looming over the nation's highest court." "Next year at this time, two-thirds of the Court will be at least 70 years old, and [pro-abortion] Justice John Paul Stevens will be one birthday shy of his 90th. To say the next president holds the keys to the make-up of this court-and lower ones-is an understatement," Perkins says. Additionally, Perkins notes the next president will inherit at least 44 vacancies in the federal judiciary -- people who will make would could be the final decisions on the fate of pro-life legislation or rise to Supreme Court or appeals court positions. McCain, Obama Must Address Differences on Abortion-Infanticide in Debate
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The head of one of the nation's biggest pro-life groups says the upcoming presidential debate on Tuesday should include a discussion of how Barack Obama and John McCain disagree on a significant life or death issue. Wendy Wright, the head of the Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, tells LifeNews.com, that the two candidates are far apart on whether newborns who survive failed abortions should receive medical care. While Senator McCain voted for a federal bill to protect the infants, Obama, as a state legislator, opposed a nearly-identical bill that would have made the medical care state law in Illinois. “Coming on the heels of the highly-watched vice-presidential debate, McCain and Obama need to address one issue that was not discussed -- abortion," Wright says. Wright indicated she has heard rumblings about the possibility of Senator McCain criticizing Obama for his votes against the bills for medical care for babies who survive abortions -- which have earned him the ire of pro-life voters. "The most obvious example that we expect to come up in Tuesday’s debate is the Born Alive Infant Protection Act," she said. "John McCain should explain in clear terms why he voted for this federal law, and Barack Obama should explain why he voted against a state law that was identical to the federal law." Catholics United Bombards Voters With Flier Reducing Importance of Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Catholics United is hoping to confuse pro-life Catholic voters into thinking that it's alright for them to consider abortion just as or less important than other political issues -- despite clear teaching from the Catholic Church saying nothing is more important than the destruction of 50 million unborn children. The left-wing political group, which has been working throughout the election to provide cover for Catholics to support pro-abortion candidate Barack Obama, chose Pro-Life Sunday to sent out an email blast with a new flier. Entitled, "Pro-Life Means Action on Behalf of All Human Life," the flier only barely hides its intention to call Obama's policies on unrelated issues "pro-life" while blasting pro-life groups that support John McCain or say pro-life issues should take priority. LifeNews.com spoke with Father Frank Pavone, the director of Priests for Life, who says the flier and email misrepresent not only the teachings of the Catholic Church and its top leaders, but much more. Pavone says Catholics United is right that every political issue can be considered a "pro-life" issue -- but he insists the group fails to understand that people who are victims of abortion can never enjoy things like better health care or a better economy. "The assertion cuts both ways, because it also means that to actually deny the right to life of any one group undermines all our efforts for justice and peace," he explained. McCain and Palin, Not Obama, Have Best Approach to Abortion, Roe v. Wade
by Dorinda Bordlee
As a woman and a lawyer, I agree with Alice Paul - the author of the original Equal Rights Amendment - who observed that "abortion is the ultimate exploitation of women." But one need not agree with my view that abortion is a violation of the human right to life in order to agree with John McCain and Sarah Palin's position that Roe v. Wade must be overturned, returning the abortion issue to the individual states. As champions of democracy by the people and for the people, McCain and Palin understand that the issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat. McCain and Palin are also correct in pointing out that the reversal of Roe v. Wade would be only the first step in the long path toward ending the violence of abortion.
As they explain on their web site, "Once the question is returned to the states, the fight for life will be one of courage and compassion - the courage of a pregnant mother to bring her child into the world and the compassion of civil society to meet her needs and those of her newborn baby." At the core of this issue is John McCain's commitment to nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench. Full story at LifeNews.com

Americans Take Pro-Life Message on Abortion to the Streets in Life Chain
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
Tens of thousands of Americans took the streets in over 1,300 cities across the United States and Canada on Sunday afternoon as part of the annual Life Chain. The event features a silent pro-life witness as participants stand with signs condemning abortion and promoting adoption as a solution. Hundreds of western New York residents formed a Life Chain that extended from an abortion center in Buffalo all the way to Niagara Falls. Dr. Alveda King joined the event and told participants to pray to end abortion because it hurts more than just unborn children. "We are here not just as an act of conscience, but also to cry out to God, that He'll hear, and bring this place, and many places like it, down. Because abortion kills babies, and abortion hurts women, it destroys families," she said. In Colorado Springs, Colorado, JoAnn Trujillo, a Respect Life coordinator for St. Mary's Catholic Church, helped pass out signs. Some of them read "I'm Glad You Were Born," others said "I'm Glad You Were Born," and others pointed out how abortion hurts women. Charlie Damore brought her three children to the event. "I want people to know there is support for women who feel there is no other option," she said.

California Parental Notification Measure Tops 50 Percent in Latest State Poll
Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The November ballot proposal that would allow parents in California to know when their minor daughters are considering an abortion has done well in previous polls achieving a plurality. Now, a new survey finds a clear majority of voters say they will vote for Proposition 4 next month. A new poll from Survey USA indicates growing support for Sarah's Law. With less than a month before the election, the survey found 52 percent of California residents plan to support the measure. "The poll confirms what we have heard throughout the state - more Californians than ever before are supporting the mainstream message of parental notification," Vince Vasquez, of the Yes on Proposition 4 campaign, told LifeNews.com. Vasquez pointed out that support from Democrats (38 percent) and women voters (52 percent) for Proposition 4 has increased since 2006, when polls found that only 33 percent of Democrat voters and 44 percent of women supported a similar parental notification ballot measure. The Survey USA poll also indicates that 36 percent of voters who call themselves "pro-choice" on abortion plan to support the parental notification measure. Full story at LifeNews.com

Arizona Choose Life License Plates Move Forward With Supreme Court Ruling
Phoenix, AZ (LifeNews.com) -- The Supreme Court let stand a federal appeals court ruling saying Arizona pro-life advocates would have their First Amendment rights abrogated by state officials preventing motorists from purchasing Choose Life license plates. The high court denied a writ of certiorari in the case of Arizona Life Coalition v. Stanton after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the September 2005 decision of U.S. District Judge Paul G. Rosenblatt. The appellate panel of judges said the group would have its First Amendment rights abrogated, especially because other specialty license plates have been approved for sale in the state. Rosenblatt upheld the ruling of the Arizona License Plate Commission, which denied the application for the speciality plate from a coalition of pro-life groups including Arizona Right to Life, the Center for Arizona Policy, and several crisis pregnancy centers. They submitted the plate application in January 2002 and sued the state in September 2003 after the commission denied the plate. Peter Gentala, attorney for the Arizona Life Coalition, told LifeNews.com after the Supreme Court's decision, “Life-affirming expression is constitutionally protected just like any other speech." “The Arizona Life Coalition’s message has been censored for over six years. Now it’s time for the License Plate Commission to act quickly to approve the plates so they can go into production as the law requires," she said. Full story at LifeNews.com

Northern Ireland Pro-Life Group Backs New Abortion Amendment to HFE Bill
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- The leading pro-life group in Northern Ireland says it welcomes a new amendment to the HFE bill in the British Parliament that won't go as far as another one MPs may consider. The new amendment extends abortion to Northern Ireland only if its legislature approves legalizing it. The amendments are likely to be debated during the Report Stage of the HFE Bill in October or November. Pro-abortion lawmakers had previously indicated they would attach an amendment that would extend the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland -- making abortion legal despite over 40 years of pro-life laws protecting women and children. The pro-life group Precious Life tells LifeNews.com the new amendment would extend the abortion law only if the Northern Ireland Assembly approves allowing abortions -- something considered highly unlikely. The group says Frank Field, Labour MP for Birkenhead tabled a counter-amendment on Friday to that effect. Precious Life has been running a postcard petition campaign since January calling for Westminster MPs to respect the pro-life ethos in Northern Ireland and not override the democratic process by attempting to impose abortion there. Missouri Case of Paying for Inmates' Abortions Gets No Supreme Court Review
Jefferson City, MO (LifeNews.com) -- A Missouri court case involving a question of whether state taxpayers should be forced to pay for the abortions of pregnant inmates did not get a review from the Supreme Court. A federal appeals court ruled in January that Missouri correctional facilities must take pregnant prisoners for elective abortions at taxpayer expense. The ruling came despite state law prohibiting Missouri from paying for abortions with public funds. The state appealed a judge's decision last year forcing it to transport a pregnant prisoner to get an abortion, but a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the lower court's decision. The state appealed the appellate court's ruling to the Supreme Court, which denied review in the case, known as Roe v. Crawford. Denise Burke, the vice president and legal director for Americans United for Life, told LifeNews.com Monday she was disappointed the high court didn't take the case. "By denying review, the Supreme Court is allowing a prisoner to unilaterally demand that she be transported for a controversial elective procedure where the associated costs will ultimately be borne by the taxpayers," Burke said.
